The Top Way To Stop Stress Eating In Its Tracks

Taking time for yourself is a step that cannot be skipped when you’re on the road to a healthier relationship with food, your body and your weight. You know all those moments where you’ve turned to food because you were stressed, sad, tired or angry?  We’ve all had them - the ice cream tub after a breakup, Mickey D’s during exam season or that bag of chips you chomped away at after a fight with your best friend. Remember how not- so- good- you felt after, especially if you were on a roll with your diet?

Don’t Use Food to Cope

For so many of us food is how we cope, it’s that quick pick me up when our emotions get the best of us. But wouldn’t it be great if you could have a quick pick me up that came with all of those good feelings and none of the guilt or regret? Ditching your diet and getting on a path to weight loss that you can stick with starts with letting go of food as a way to make ourselves feel better, and replacing it with another, healthier form of self-care. Breaking that habit makes the rest of it so much easier, you have room for treats and dinner with friends now and then and you'll find cravings less intense and so much easier to manage.

Get Off the Diet Roller Coaster

Believe it or not, no diet or eating plan should make you miserable! Life is too short to spend hungry, guilty or feeling deprived. By taking back control of what, when and why you’re eating, you won’t have to follow super restrictive diets or go on a juice cleanse after you ate your way through a rough patch. Getting to and keeping a healthy, happy weight is so much easier when you don’t have the rollercoaster of ups and downs.

Use Your Calendar – Write It Down

So how do you break that habit? Find ways to practice self-care regularly even when you’re already feeling great. Schedule it into the calendar if you have to!

My favourite for busy days? Making myself a fabulous chai tea in my favourite mug and savouring those first few sips and the spicy scent. If I have a little more time I’ll enjoy that whole mug while checking out French Bulldog pictures on Instagram, even if it is just for five minutes in between clients on a busy day.
Here are some other small, simple moments that you can fit in every day:

  • Curl up with your favourite tea or a steaming mug of coffee in the comfiest spot you can find
  • Pop out for a quick walk at lunch instead of staying at the computer
  • Meeting up with girlfriends for coffee or even a Skype date
  • Plan your dream vacation
  • Wake up five minutes early to sit quietly with the morning coffee
  • Read one chapter out of a much loved book
  • Listen to an audiobook or relaxing nature sounds on your commute (it sounds geeky but it works!)
  • Stop what you’re doing to stretch those tight desk jockey muscles at the same time every day
  • Crank up the tunes and rock out to music from your youth when you’re driving or cleaning the house
  • Take the dog, baby or hubby out for a walk before bed

Side bonus of all these good vibes?  You’ll feel better all- around, so you’ll find those negative emotions less and less intense the more you put yourself first. Trust me, all those people around you will thank you!
